F: 1890-1895 MHz mobile paired with 1970-1975 MHz base; licensed

C: 1895-1910 MHz mobile paired with 1975-1990 MHz base; licensed

The 1900MHz PCS band is divided between six basic bands. The band plan has two 30MHz blocks (15 base, 15 mobile) licensed to an entire "Metropolitan Trading Area" or MTA. These blocks, A and B, were auctioned off. The C block is also a 30MHz block, but was auctioned by "Basic Trading Area", or BTA - a subdivision of the MTA. The C block was set aside for carriers with minority ownership to help open competition. The other three bands - D, E, and F - are 10MHz blocks auctioned by BTA (5 base, 5 mobile). The F block was set aside with similar restrictions as the C band.
Many licenses in the A, B, and C bands have now been subdivided - mostly by their licensees selling part of their allocation. Some are now assigned by BTA or are less than 30MHz. The C band is the most notable division, with the FCC auctioning 10MHz chunks as C3, C4, and C5, or 15MHz divisions as C2 and C1.
Note that the FCC does not divide PCS into discrete channels - leaving that to the carriers based on their choice of technology.
CDMA carriers are 1.25MHz wide and in the arrangement above are allotted 25 channels each. Each block has a guard band at the top and bottom to prevent interference with neighboring carrier blocks. Each CDMA carrier can carry multiple calls through Code Division of the signal.
TDMA carriers are 30kHz and divide the blocks into channels. The A, B, and C blocks have a calculated 499 channels each (unless the carrier has sold of a portion of their frequency) while the D, E, and F blocks have 165 channels each.
Each TDMA channel can carry multiple calls through Time Division of the channel into slots.
GSM carriers are 200kHz and divide the blocks into channels. The A, B, and C blocks have a calculated 74 channels each (unless the carrier has sold of a portion of their frequency) while the D, E, and F blocks have 24 channels each.
Like CDMA and TDMA, GSM allows multiple users on each channel through sharing.

Motorola iDEN is a monopolistic proprietary digital format. Businesses and individual citizens plus government use Motorola iDEN (used by Nextel). The iDEN systems can be a two-way radio for communications when using the "Direct Connect" features. Local and state governments and the Federal Government are using it for routine and emergency communications and for surveillance, investigation, arrests, protective, and administrative operations.
Nextel has plans to break the Motorola iDEN monopoly when they switch to CDMA2000 1X.
Just like
cellular, the iDEN (used by Nextel) system overloads and becomes
useless during major events or emergencies and has dead spots and
drops calls! In addition, the iDEN downlink signals at their
cellular base stations significantly degrade performance of other
800 MHz base station receiver systems. It results in loss of
coverage and channel quality to public-safety and other types of
cellular communications. Thus, iDEN (used by Nextel) has
endangered police officers causing the inability for them to
communicate.

Interference
Bearcat scanners and most frequency counters will not detect or scan iDEN systems. However, expensive test equipment by Motorola, SAFCO, Ericsson, and others can be used for analyzing and decoding Motorola iDEN. Modified Motorola radios can also be used.
An example of an
interconnect call follows:
1. When the mobile radio is powered up, it scans and locks on to
a control channel.
2. The mobile radio registers on the system.
3. When it initiates a call, the mobile radio places a service
request on the control channel.
4. The fixed end system assigns the mobile radio to dedicated
control channel.
5. The mobile radio uses the dedicated control channel to
transmit the information required by the fixed end system to
complete the call.
6. The fixed end system assigns the mobile radio to a traffic
channel to be used for communication of voice or data.

200kHz GSM, 1.23MHz CDMA, and 30kHz AMPS/TDMA Channels
AMPS
The 800MHz cellular band is divided equally between two carriers.
The original band plan had 333 channels per carrier, with base
frequencies running from 870.030 to 889.98MHz and mobile
frequencies 45MHz lower (825.030 to 844.980MHz). Each channel is
allotted 30kHz. The center channels, 313-333 and 334-354, are
used as control channels for the AMPS system.
When the band was expanded to 832 channels (covering 869.040 to
893.970 base, 824.040 to 848.970 mobile) the original channels
remained with 33 channels being added at the bottom and 133 to
the top. This led to an "A" band of channels (666-716)
dividing the B band.
AMPS channels cannot be used on neighboring cells at the same
time. In general, the allotment has been divided into seven pools
with each cell or sector using one pool. This allows an
approximate maximum of 56 users per cell sector.
CDMA
CDMA carriers are 1.25MHz wide but in the arrangement above are
allotted 1.23Mhz (or 41 channels) each. The CDMA carrier is
numbered based on the center channel of the carrier, using the
AMPS channel numbering. The display above shows how a CDMA system
can be overlaid on the existing 800MHz bands. This use starts
with the Primary CDMA channel, 283 or 384, and works outward
until enough carriers have been added to handle the desired level
of CDMA traffic. Channels 691 and 777 are the Secondary CDMA
channel.
Note that the "A" carrier has room for eight contiguous
CDMA carriers and one carrier at 691. The "B" carrier
has room for seven contiguous CDMA carriers and one carrier at
777. While an additional CDMA carrier can be added at 739, it
would interfere with the carrier at 777. Note also that a certain
number of AMPS channels are not overlaid with CDMA channels.
These are used for guard bands between services, AMPS service,
and remain available for other possible uses.
Each CDMA carrier can carry multiple calls through Code Division
of the signal. CDMA carriers are designed to be reused on
neighboring cells and sectors, with a maximum 64 users per
carrier per cell sector. 1x CDMA technology doubles the number of
possible users on each cell. This allows for an 10 to 20 fold
increase over AMPS technology. (Although some capacity is lost
when a user is being handed off between cell sectors.)
TDMA
TDMA carriers are 30kHz and follow the same assignments as AMPS
channel numbers. As with AMPS, channels may not be reused on
neighboring cells or sectors. Each TDMA channel can carry
multiple calls through Time Division of the channel into slots.
Normally this is 3 slots per channel, but the specification
allows for 6 with reduced quality. This allows for a 3 or 6 fold
increase over AMPS technlogy.
GSM
GSM 850MHz band carriers are 200kHz and are numbered 128-251 in
the cellular band. Both carriers have a maximum of 61 carriers. (The
"A" carrier has 128-181 and 233-239, and the "B"
carrier has 183-231 and 240-251.) Each GSM carrier can carry
multiple calls, but cannot be used on neighboring cells. The GSM
carrier is divided by time into frames, allowing up to 24 users
per GSM channel. As each GSM carrier consumes 7 AMPS channels
worth of bandwidth, this provides for an approximate 4 fold
increase over AMPS.
Summary
US providers are currently required to offer AMPS service by the
FCC (this requirement is scheduled to sunset in November of 2007).
In addition, many carriers offer another technology - TDMA, CDMA,
or GSM - to better use their bandwidth. Some carriers have
decided to support multiple advanced technologies (such as CDMA
and TDMA) in order to serve roamers or during their own
transition to other advanced technologies.
Enter a phone number
into your cell phone and press the [SND] key. This is what
happens next:
1.Scan Control Channels: Your cell phone needs to use the "closest"
base station because that's the one with the strongest signal and
the one that will give the best connection. To find the closest
base station, your phone checks all 21 control channels and
determines which has the strongest signal.
2.Choose Strongest: Your cell phone chooses the strongest signal
and decides to use that one for placing the call.
3.Send Origination Message: Your cell phone now transmits a very
short message (about 1/4 second) that contains the MIN (Mobile
Identification Number, aka your cell phone number), its ESN (Electronic
Serial Number), and the number you just dialed.
4.Get Channel Assignment: After the cellular service provider
verifies that you are a valid, paying customer (based on the MIN
and ESN your phone sent), the base station sends a Channel
Assignment message to your phone (also a short 1/4-second burst).
This message tells your phone where (that is, on which channel)
the conversation will take place.
5.Begin Conversation: Your cell phone tunes to the assigned
channel and begins the call. The spurts you hear that indicate
the phone is ringing at the other end (which is called "ring
back") or the busy signal that you hear do not begin until
you get to this step. Both of these are transmitted by the base
station.
